The empire is expanding: McGettigan’s Group to launch first airline route from Dubai to Dublin in late 2017
Initial plans for the aircraft include a twice weekly direct route from Dubai to Dublin
McGettigan’s group, the Dubai headquartered Irish pub operator, has announced plans to launch its first aircraft, McGettijet in Q4 2017. The airplane model will be a Boeing 737 and it will be distinctly styled with existing McGettigan’s bars and customers in mind.
“I do a lot of travelling and spend many, many hours on planes. On one particular journey I found myself frustrated that I could not get live, high quality coverage of an important rugby game on the flight. It got me thinking about my ideal flight experience and it sort of spiraled from there! It’s still early days for this ambitious project and the industry is certainly new to us but we could not be more excited.”
Dennis McGettigan, CEO McGettigan’s Group
The aircraft will encompass key components of what Dennis describes as “the McGettigan’s experience” namely top class food, live music entertainment, sport and no shortage of quality Irish beverages.
The poor standard of food available on airplanes has been a recurring gripe of air passengers for many years. McGettijet aims to combat this by providing a menu designed around the fare served in their award winning bars. Passengers can expect to feast on familiar dishes such as; beer battered fish and chips, steak burgers served on fresh Waterford Blaa rolls and, McGettigan’s signature chicken wings will of course be available on demand throughout the flight. A McGettigan’s trained chef will be present on each flight to oversee the quality of the food being served from the on board menu.
The aircraft will not be split into the traditional first, business and economy classes but rather the travel preference of the passenger. First artist impressions of the aircraft show widescreen HD TVs in the premium cabin, a guaranteed must for sports fans.
The back of the plane, lovingly referred to as ‘the kids table’ by the design and marketing team has been unofficially ear-marked as ‘craic class’ and is dedicated for those really looking to enjoy their flight with each seat equipped with self-service taps for passengers to pour their own pints of the black stuff. Impromptu live music sessions from Irish musicians will also take place in this area of the plane.
The first McGettijet route will be primarily targeted towards the leisure market, Dubai, Western Europe expats, and group travel business such as bachelor parties and those travelling to Irish sporting events. Initial plans for the aircraft include a twice weekly direct route from Dubai to Dublin.
McGettigan’s Pub was first opened in Ireland in the 1960’s, on Queen Street in Dublin by Jim McGettigan. Since that day, the business has grown from Dublin, moved to Dubai and Abu Dhabi, back home to Donegal, Limerick and Galway with further locations in Singapore, Clarke Quay and New York City.
In total the McGettigan’s pub group employs over 300 staff members and with further expansion planned for 2015 and 2016, this figure is set to increase massively. New locations for 2016 will include London, Bahrain, and further locations in the US.
McGettigan’s – proud history, bright future
